Alternative Treatment for Cerebral Palsy

Alternative Treatment for Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is considered a neurological disorder caused by a non-progressive brain injury or malformation that occurs while the child’s brain is under development. Cerebral palsy primarily affects body movement and muscle coordination. Though cerebral palsy can be defined, having cerebral palsy does not define the person that has the condition.
Cerebral palsy (CP) is an abnormality of motor function, the ability to move and control movements.
Cerebral palsy is acquired at an early age, usually less than a year of age.
Cerebral palsy is due to a brain abnormality that does not progress in severity.
The causes of cerebral palsy include prematurity, genetic disorders, strokes, and infection of the brain.
Taking certain precautions during the pregnancy might decrease the risk of cerebral palsy.
The treatment of spasticity can involve multiple allied health care professionals. Physical and occupational therapists play an important role.
Physical therapy: The extent of physical therapy depends on the degree of spasticity, hypotonia, and motor impairment. The main therapeutic effect of physical therapy is maintaining range of motion at the joints, thereby preventing contractures. Some scientists and therapists feel that physical therapy actually helps maintain the connections in the brain, although this is controversial. Other skills, such as improved gait, stance, and balance can be helped by physical therapy. A strong, proactive physical therapy program greatly aids in the life of a child with cerebral palsy.
Occupational therapy: Occupational therapy assists children with the skills needed for day-to-day life in school and at home, including eating, writing, and work skills. In early infancy, occupational therapists can provide assistance in feeding a child with a poor or uncoordinated sucking response.

Speech therapy: Speech and language pathologists are involved with the development and improvement of speech production. Using different techniques the speech pathologist helps to improve the quality and the quantity of the speech production. The role of these specialists is not limited to speech production alone, but they also teach the patients other communication techniques (sign language, use of communication boards) to facilitate the communication abilities.

Is There Any Treatment For Cerebral Palsy

Is There Any Treatment For Cerebral Palsy
The term cerebral palsy refers to any one of a number of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination but don’t worsen over time. Even though cerebral palsy affects muscle movement, it isn’t caused by problems in the muscles or nerves. It is caused by abnormalities in parts of the brain that control muscle movements. The majority of children with cerebral palsy are born with it, although it may not be detected until months or years later. The early signs of cerebral palsy usually appear before a child reaches 3 years of age. The most common are a lack of muscle coordination when performing voluntary movements (ataxia); stiff or tight muscles and exaggerated reflexes (spasticity); walking with one foot or leg dragging; walking on the toes, a crouched gait, or a “scissored” gait; and muscle tone that is either too stiff or too floppy. A small number of children have cerebral palsy as the result of brain damage in the first few months or years of life, brain infections such as bacterial meningitis or viral encephalitis, or head injury from a motor vehicle accident, a fall, or child abuse.

Cerebral palsy can’t be cured, but treatment will often improve a child's capabilities. In general, the earlier treatment begins the better chance children have of overcoming developmental disabilities or learning new ways to accomplish the tasks that challenge them. Treatment may include physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, drugs to control seizures, relax muscle spasms, and alleviate pain; surgery to correct anatomical abnormalities or release tight muscles; braces and other orthotic devices; wheelchairs and rolling walkers; and communication aids such as computers with attached voice synthesizers.

Stem Cell Therapy for Cerebral Palsy(CP)

The stem cell therapy is a latest medical technique for treating Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy refers to a group of brain disorders caused by non-progressive brain injury that occurs during pregnancy, delivery or after birth.

Conventionally, no effective treatments are identified effective for treating injury that already occurred in the brain. The patients with this disease suffer from reduced motor function, impaired speech and coordination, etc, and they need long-term care giving by the family members.

With the latest medical progression, however, the stem cell therapy could give the patients a second chance for embracing a better life. Background information on cerebral palsy(CP)The brain is the headquarters of human body that control speech, motor function, coordination, logical thinking and other important phycological activities.

In cerebral palsy, depending on the location of brain injury, it can cause varying symptoms that affect normal life. With increased muscle tension and muscle weakness, the patients often have their limbs stiff and cramped, which could cause joint deformity over the long term; meanwhile, it also causes inability of sitting, standing and walking.

Children and adults suffering from cerebral palsy will require life-long care and medical attention, the costs of which can be great over a lifetime. In the research for better solution, the researches have been enthusiastic for the possible chance stem cell therapy may bring to the families and the society. This novel treatment could give a chance for significantly reducing the sufferings from cerebral palsy and returning to a better life.

Stem cell therapy: good news for patients with Cerebral Palsy(CP)With the advancing exploration and research in recent years, stem cell therapy has been brought in clinic for treating cerebral palsy. In conventional medical filed, it was commonly believed that cerebral nerve cells that are already damaged can not be repaired or treated by any therapy. This view has been changed in the experimental research and clinical practice of stem cell therapy on cerebral palsy.

Stem Cell Therapy for Cerebral Palsy(CP)
Stem cells are cells with self-renewing and multiple-differentiation potentials. Therefore, they have the potential of differentiating new nerve cells that replace damaged nerve cells and repair brain injury. With stem cells injected to the injured brain area, they can contribute to the repairing of brain damage and improve cerebral function in controlling motor function, coordination, speech, intelligence, etc.

Stem cell therapy has proven an effective and safe treatment for cerebral palsy through our practice of over six thousand cases of patients. As a pioneer in stem cell research and practice for treating cerebral palsy in the world, our stem cell centerhas published over sixty papers on domestic journals and 16 papers on SCI which reflect our considerations and conclusions during the years of practice. We have strict requirements on the patients for treatment and also understand a lot of factors can influence patient choices. Therefore, we suggest patients to communicate with one of our doctors before they make the decision. Patients could either email us to, or request an online consultation to learn more detailed information on stem cell treatment for cerebral palsy.

Traditional Chinese Medicine for treatment of cerebral palsy

The objective of this study was to systematically evaluate the effects of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapy including acupuncture, tu'ina, oral herbal medicine, herbal bathing, and collateral-channels conduct therapy for treating children with cerebral palsy (CP).
We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on TCM for children with CP. We searched the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, databases of Chinese biomedical journals/Chinese Medical Current Contents, Wan Fang Data, PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library until the end of July 2009, and searched the reference list of retrieved papers. Data were extracted by 1 author and checked for validation by another author, and data were analyzed using RevMan 4.3.2. Only one meta-analysis was performed due to the heterogeneity among the trials.
Traditional Chinese Medicine for treatment of cerebral palsy

Part of having cerebral palsy means finding new ways to cope with various physical symptoms, some of which acupuncture is believed to remedy.
The most comprehensive study of acupuncture and children was funded by the National Institutes of Health and performed by the University of Arizona Pediatrics Department. The study involved several children; its goal was to determine to what extent muscle hypertonicity could be eliminated.
One child in the study had severely tight muscles that were impeding the development of his internal organs. The 5-year-old had limited vocal ability, and his affect was more or less flat. He underwent acupuncture at seven channels on his lower and upper extremities; the treatment lasted a few hours. Researchers noted a decrease in hypertonicity that was short in duration.
After a second treatment, the child began crying at the insertion of the needles, and researchers removed the needles.
Auricular treatment without needles was implemented, and it was noted that his muscles were not as hard as they were before treatment. In this treatment, the points were stimulated by an ear probe. By the end of 16 treatments with the ear probe, the child’s limb thrusting was reduced by 50 percent.
Another randomized controlled trial at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center indicated that acupuncture may provide relief to children with spastic cerebral palsy. The evaluation-blind trial assessed children ages 12 to 72 months with spasticity.
After 16 weeks of acupuncture treatment, one group of children displayed improvement in their gross motor functionality that exceeded researcher’s expectations. The conclusion of the study is that acupuncture can, if done properly and early, help children improve their ability to function physically, but further study is needed.

One area of promise is in the area of laser acupuncture, which targets points by using low-energy, pulsating laser beams instead of traditional needles.

Can Smoking Cause Cerebral Palsy

Can Smoking Cause Cerebral Palsy
Smoking can also cause other birth defects, reduced birth circumference, altered brainstem development, altered lung structure, and cerebral palsy.
Sometimes, cerebral palsy occurs when the baby's brain simply doesn't develop properly due to a genetic disorder or other problem in the womb. However, sometimes diseases, infections or other conditions carried by the mother are a factor. Mothers with conditions such as diabetes andepilepsy have a higher risk of having a baby with cerebral palsy. The same is true of mothers who acquire infections like rubella (German measles), toxoplasmosis (a parasite), kidney infections or herpes. Drinking alcohol, smoking and taking certain drugs during pregnancy can also cause the brain
Drugs, Alcohol and Smoking: Protect Yourself and Your Baby from Cerebral Palsy
After your baby is born, your protective instincts are powerful. As the new "mama bear," you would challenge anyone who threatened to harm your precious new bundle of joy.
But did you know that protecting your baby's health starts before conception?
If you smoke, drink alcohol, or use any illicit drug, you are putting your child at risk for potentially permanent and devastating health problems.
But you-like millions of women around the world-wonder, "Will an occasional glass of wine hurt my baby?"
Studies are not conclusive as to whether or not it is safe to consume alcohol in any amount. It is therefore recommended that you abstain from consuming alcohol until after your baby is born. This ensures your baby is not forced to fight the ill affects of alcohol while she is developing and growing in the womb.
Maternal consumption of drugs and/or alcohol poisons your baby and seriously affects her nervous system, blood vessels, and internal organs. These impacts significantly increase your baby's chances of having a low birth weight and brain damage.
Brain damage caused by alcohol, smoking, and/or drug use can lead to the development of cerebral palsy.
If you are already pregnant, it's not too late to stop exposing yourself and your baby to these potential hazards. The sooner you stop, the better for you and your baby. And if you plan to get pregnant, now is the time to start protecting your unborn child.
For any particular child, it's often impossible to pinpoint the cause of the problem. Doctors do know, however, that anything that interferes with a growing brain can trigger the condition. The risk of cerebral palsy increases dramatically if a pregnant woman smokes, drinks heavily, has diabetes, or catches German measles (also known as rubella). Some children with cerebral palsy didn't get enough oxygen in the womb, perhaps because of a small kink in the umbilical cord. Premature babies, who tend to suffer complications before and after birth, are much more likely than full-term babies to develop cerebral palsy; twins or triplets are also at greater risk for the condition. In some cases, cerebral palsy is caused by a head injury or a brain infection such as meningitis during the child's first two years of life.

The best way to prevent cerebral palsy is to protect your child's growing brain. If you are planning to get pregnant and have never had German measles, talk to your doctor about getting vaccinated against the disease. If you are already pregnant, try to stay as healthy as possible. Get regular prenatal medical care, eat a nutritious diet, avoid smoking and alcohol, and always talk to your doctor before taking over-the-counter or prescription medicines or herbal supplements. If you learn that you have maternal diabetes, which occurs during some pregnancies, get treated for it right away and be vigilant in caring for yourself.

Physical Therapy for cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a common cause of childhood disability. It is defined as a group of nonprogressive but often changing motor impairment syndromes secondary to lesions or anomalies of brain arising in early stages of its development. Although the damage is non-progressive, the clinical picture changes as the undamaged nervous system develops and the child grows. It can also be defined as a non-progressive neuromotor disorder of cerebral origin. Cerebral palsy includes a group of heterogeneous clinical syndromes of variable severity ranging from minor incapacitation deficits.
Physical therapy is a branch of rehabilitative health that is considered one of the most important aspects of treating children with cerebral palsy. Those with cerebral palsy experience mobility, function, posture and balance challenges of varying degrees, and physical therapy – which focuses on basic mobility such as standing, walking, climbing stairs, reaching or operating a wheelchair – is a key element in the multidisciplinary approach to increasing a child’s mobility.
Physical therapy is the rehabilitation of physical impairments by training and strengthening a patient’s large muscles – those in the arms, legs, and abdomen. The goal of physical therapy is to maximize functional control of the body, or increase gross motor function.
The goal of physical therapy is to help individuals:
develop coordination
build strength
improve balance
maintain flexibility
optimize physical functioning levels
maximize independence
Physical therapy for cerebral palsy patients consists of activities and education to improve flexibility, strength, mobility, and function. A physical therapist also designs, modifies, and orders adaptive equipment. Physical therapy can take place in clinics, hospitals, schools, and should carry on in the home through an exercise program. Physical therapy for cerebral palsy patients will not be successful without an ongoing daily home program.
A physical therapy program should consist of a number of exercises that include stretching, strengthening, and positioning. To stretch the muscles, the arms and legs must be moved in ways that produce a slow, steady pull on the muscles to keep them loose. Because of the increased muscle tone of the cerebral palsy patient, they tend to have generally tight muscles. Therefore, it is extremely important to perform daily stretches to keep the arms and legs limber, allowing the child to continue to move and function. Strengthening exercises work specific muscle groups to enable them to support the body better and increase function. Positioning requires the body to be placed in a specific position to attain long stretches. Some positions help to minimize unwanted tone. Positioning can be done in a variety of ways. Bracing, abduction pillows, knee immobilizers, wheelchair inserts, sitting recommendations, and handling techniques are all part of positioning techniques used in physical therapy for cerebral palsy patients.

50 Million people have epilepsy worldwide~

50 Million people have epilepsy worldwide~
About 326,000 American children under the age of 15 have epilepsy and 200,000 new cases of epilepsy are diagnosed each year.
Facts Epilepsy is a condition of the brain causing seizures. A seizure is a disruption of the electrical communication between neuronsSomeone is said to have epilepsy if they experience two or more unprovoked seizures separated by at least 24 hoursThe seizures in epilepsy may be related to a brain injury or a family tendency, but most of the time the cause is unknown

There are over 40 different types of seizures
There are over 40 different types of seizures
First aid for seizures

1. If a person starts to show symptoms of a seizure, the first and most important thing you can do is
2. Make sure the person is safe and remove any hazardous objects.
3. Provide comfort. Help them sit down in a safe place. If they are at risk of falling, help lay them down on the floor. Support the person’s head to prevent it from hitting the floor.
4. Once the situation is under control, encourage people to step back and give the person some room.
5. Trying to stop movements or forcibly holding a person down doesn’t stop a seizure. Restraining a person can lead to injuries and make the person more confused, agitated or aggressive.
6. Time the seizure and make a note of behavior and other details. This information is helpful for doctors since the patient doesn't know what's going on.
7. Never put anything in a person's mouth during a seizure. Jaw and face muscles may tighten during a seizure, causing the person to bite down.
8. Make sure their breathing is ok. If the person is lying down, turn them on their side, with their mouth pointing to the ground. This prevents saliva from blocking their airway and helps the person breathe more easily.

9. Call 911 for seizures beyond 5 minutes, if breathing is difficult, an injury was sustained or for cluster seizures

Rehabilitation And Therapy Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is the leading cause of childhood disability affecting function and development. This disorder affects the development of movement and posture that is believed to arise from nonprogressive disturbances in the developing fetal or infant brain. In addition to the motor disorders that characterize cerebral palsy, which may limit a patient's activities, individuals with cerebral palsy often display epilepsy, secondary musculoskeletal problems, and disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, communication, and behavior.
A rehabilitation specialist has an important role in helping coordinate the care of these often very involved patients as well as assisting with many aspects of care, including, but not limited to, those relating to spasticity management, therapies, modalities, bracing, sialorrhea, and insomnia.
Rehabilitation And Therapy Cerebral Palsy

Inpatient rehabilitation may be especially useful after orthopedic surgery or placement of a baclofen pump for children with cerebral palsy for intensive physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy. These patients receive therapy in at least 2 disciplines for 3 hours daily. A change in functional status following orthopedic surgery or baclofen pump placement may necessitate the need for inpatient rehabilitation, even if needed for family training for transfers.
Acupuncture Therapy for children with cerebral palsy
Part of having cerebral palsy means finding new ways to cope with various physical symptoms, some of which acupuncture is believed to remedy.
The most comprehensive study of acupuncture and children was funded by the National Institutes of Health and performed by the University of Arizona Pediatrics Department. The study involved several children; its goal was to determine to what extent muscle hypertonicity could be eliminated.

The conclusion of the study is that acupuncture can, if done properly and early, help children improve their ability to function physically, but further study is needed.
One area of promise is in the area of laser acupuncture, which targets points by using low-energy, pulsating laser beams instead of traditional needles.

The beam radiates against the skin and stimulates the point in a way that a needle would. A study performed on 29 children in China with brain damage, when they received laser acupuncture on various scalp points, experienced improvements in cerebral blood flow, which can enhance physical function.

What Classification of Cerebral Palsy

What Classification of Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy is classified according to the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). The GMFCS was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Surveillance of Cerebral Palsy in Europe (SCPE) as a universal standard for the determining the physical capabilities of a patient with cerebral palsy. GMFCS focuses on what the child is able to do rather than what his or her limitations are. GMFCS has five levels and is age specific. Emphasis is on the following capabilities:
the ability to sit
capability for movement and mobility
charting independence
use of adaptive technology
The GMFCS has five levels, which increase with decreasing mobility. The five levels of the GMFCS are:
Level I
able to walk without limitations
Level II
able to walk long distances, but cannot run or jump
may need assistive devices such as braces when first learning to walk
may need a wheel chair outside of the home
Level III
able to sit with little support and is independent in standing
able to “walk with adaptive assistance”
walking indoors requires “hand held adaptive assistance”
requires wheeled assistance outdoors
Level IV
limited self-mobility
some support when sitting
able to move independently with wheeled assistance
Level V
head and trunk limitations are severe
need for assistive technology and manual help is extensive

may be able to control a motorized wheel chair

How Children with cerebral palsy be formed

Q : When four months pregnant belly fetus will get knocked cerebral palsy it? A child is born with cerebral palsy, and four months belly knocked that there is no relationship ah? When pregnant belly will not get knocked cerebral palsy ah?

A :
Analysis: cerebral palsy disease is a disease caused by central nervous system damage, namely anterior horn cells (or cranial nerve motor nucleus) over parts of the nervous system damage caused by paralysis, and lesions of the disease in the brain, so central injury has become one of the reasons children with cerebral palsy.
How Children with cerebral palsy be formed

Suggestion: First, children with cerebral palsy treatment is long-term work fine. Children with cerebral palsy treatment science is strong, demanding, experts recommend treatment with NCR neuronal regeneration therapy. Second, carry out children with cerebral palsy cerebral palsy treatment must first clear a treatable disease.

How Is Cerebral Palsy Treated ?

Cerebral Palsy is Treating that mainly providing Stem Cell Treatment and Traditional Chinese Medicine to help the Cerebral Palsy family and patients. What Are Symptoms of cerebral palsy

The symptoms of cerebral palsy normally become apparent during the first three years of a child's life.
The main symptoms are:
muscle stiffness or floppiness
muscle weakness
random and uncontrolled body movements
balance and co-ordination problems
These symptoms can affect different areas of the body and vary in severity from person to person. Some people will only have minor problems, whereas others will be severely disabled.

Many people with cerebral palsy also have a number of associated problems, including repeated seizures or fits, drooling problems and swallowing difficulties. Some people with the condition may have communication and learning difficulties, although intelligence is often unaffected.
A child with the condition may be slower in achieving important developmental goals, such as learning to crawl, walk or talk.
Main symptoms
The main symptoms largely depend on the specific form of cerebral palsy a person has.
The four main types of cerebral palsy are:
spastic cerebral palsy – when the muscles are weak and stiff (hypertonia), especially if moving them rapidly
dyskinetic cerebral palsy – when muscle tone (the unconscious ability to contract or relax muscles) varies between stiffness and floppiness (hypotonia), causing random and uncontrolled body movements (choreo-athetoid cerebral palsy), or involuntary spasms and postures (dystonic cerebral palsy)
ataxic cerebral palsy – when a person has balance and co-ordination problems, resulting in jerky and clumsy movements; they may also experience tremors(involuntary shaking) in their hands
mixed cerebral palsy – when a person has features of more than one of the types mentioned above
The symptoms of cerebral palsy differ in severity from person to person. Some people will only have mild problems, while others will be severely disabled.

The areas affected by cerebral palsy can also vary. Some cases only affect one side of the body, some affect primarily the legs and some affect both the arms and legs.

What Are Symptoms of Stroke

The term stroke refers to a sudden decrease in blood flow to an area of the brain. Strokes can be either hemorrhagic, caused by bleeding from one of the blood vessels, or ischemic, caused by blockage of a blood vessel supplying the brain. Regardless of the cause, a stroke can cause a temporary or permanent loss of neurologic function from the area of decreased blood flow. According to MayoClinic.com, a stroke with symptoms that resolve within 24 hours is called a transient ischemic attack, or TIA, also known as a "ministroke."
Weakness
Weakness is a common stroke symptom that may resolve within 24 hours, according to the "Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of Internal Medicine." The weakness usually occurs on the side of the body opposite from the side of the stroke. The weakness can be limited to just one part of the body, such as one arm, or it can affect the whole body.
Slurred Speech
According to MayoClinic.com, slurred speech is one of the most common symptoms of stroke that may resolve within 24 hours. The slurred speech may be due to decreased blood flow to the nerves that control the tongue and vocal chords or to more central brain areas that control speech.
Blindness
Temporary blindness that people experience during a stroke that lasts less than 24 hours is called amaurosis fugax and, according to the Cleveland Clinic, is one of the most common temporary stroke symptoms. The blindness can affect either one or both eyes.
Dizziness

People with stroke symptoms that last less than 24 hours often experience dizziness. According to the "Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of Internal Medicine," those symptoms may also be accompanied by a loss of balance and coordination.
